SMP-NATOW heaps on battle against job contractualization

This is the firm, outrage call of Samahang Manggagawang Pilipino–National Alliance of Teachers and Office Workers (SMP-NATOW), with other affiliates of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines that has intensified its campaign to end contractualization of teachers and office workers. A peaceful rally attended held last June 28, 2016 started from Manila Cathedral before marching to the office of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Intramuros, Manila.

SMP-NATOW Secretary General Milagros C. Ogalinda has lambasted DOLE in issuing Department Order 18-A which legalizes contractualization virtually in all sectors including the academe. She questioned too why the labor department has not turned ears to complaints of one of the most deprived sectors of the society, the teachers. Meanwhile, Bro Avelino S. Caraan, Jr., SMP-NATOW Deputy Secretary for Education & Research highlighted the plight of the private school teachers especially in the provinces. Based on the study conducted by the federation, labor rights violations experienced by teachers include contractualization, below minimum wage, and non-remittance of their statutory contributions.

Around 140 parents, teachers, and union leaders attended the rally.
